2012 Maya Rally Part 1 – Getting to Guanajuato

First of all I want to thank my family for the support and the freedom to make an adventure like this a reality! Also, to all of the sponsors that found away to take care of the teams that make our sport(s), hobbies, and passions possible, I couldn’t have done it with out you!

Although, I didn’t come home with a trophy for 1st place, I did come home with a win and awesome experience in my heart! My FJ Cruiser saw and pushed through what ever Mexico threw at her. It was my home…my base…my safe place to fall back to when times were tough and believe me it did get tough! Though an experience like this needs to shared (basically, I’m saying take a co-driver!) Covering the amount of mileage on an adventure like this truly wears the body, mind, and soul out. The views & foods were awesome, the terrain was rough and the locals unpredictable. But that’s Mexico. Would I do it again….”Yes”.

Thanks again to all of our sponsors and family,

Stephen Frame
Blackstar #54

Another “BIG” Thanks  to all of our sponsors and friends

Maya Rally

The MAYA RALLY is a multi-week, multi-national, expedition scavenger hunt and challenge course. It pits teams of overland drivers in their own vehicles against one another and the elements, traverses thousands of miles of variable and unknown terrain, enters rarely-seen locations far off the beaten track, and spans countless foreign horizons.

The MAYA RALLY is an overland adventure distilled to its most raw form: there is a start, there are designated challenges which must be completed for points, and there is a finish. Everything else is up to you.

There is no route. There is no support. There are few rules.

If you break your will, if you break your body, or if you break your ride, you are on your own.

At a remote point deep in the forests of Latin America, at the farthest reaches of your long and perilous journey, you will be received by an End of the World celebration in your honor, and if you win, recognized with a healthy reward.

That is, if you make it.

Wild (cat) fires, gremlins, and low flying aircraft

All of those things were a part of round six of UTV Rally Raid.

Black Star Racing fielded two cars, as usual this weekend.  The #21 and #54 Hidden Trails CanAm Commanders both got blistering starts on a blazing fast course Saturday in Bremen Alabama as Stony Lonesome OHV Park hosted the 6th round of UTV Rally Raid races.

The field crew and volunteers have been very busy a spicing up and smoothing out the race track.  The “short course” section was probably doubled in length with many new jumps and table tops.  And a couple dreaded sections in the hills were taken out or widened to help keep speeds up.

There was definitely no lack of excitement on race day either.  Before the race one enthusiast was getting up close and personal with the track through the windshield of his helicopter.  A couple passes through pit lane were so low and fast that people were almost ducking for cover.  Later during the race a refueling mishap left a Wildcat engulfed in flames and  many crew members scrambling for fire extinguishers.  This led to the fire being contained and the racer heading back out on the track.  Amazing.

The gremlins were back at work in this round as well.  The #21 Hidden Trails Commander suffered breakage on the second lap that was quickly repaired by driver Trey Frame.  Once  moving again and back to the pits a driver change occurred and Cameron Frame headed out for his chance at completing some laps only for the “gremlins” show up again.

The #54 Hidden Trails got a visit from the same group of trouble makers but fortunately was close enough to the pits for driver Andy Moss to limp it back home for its repairs.  After one more lap Stephen Frame took the wheel and stayed with it until the four hour race timer expired.

This persistence for 10 laps was enough to secure a 3rd place finish for the #54 Commander and should keep them firmly in the top four of the championship points race.   1st Place finishes are nice but getting 3rd was a great victory for the National Guard Black Star Racing team considering the troubles day brought.

Back at the race shop work continues and the hunt for, and eventual extermination of the gremlins is sought.  Offroad racing is of course brutal and the conditions demanding but this team is determined to fight and continue to produce impressive showings.   At just past the halfway point of the season much has been learned as the team branches out from its roots in PWC racing and into the offroad world.   Round 7 will be here soon and race prep begins again.

To our friends

To all  our friends and family. Our team lost a great and close friend on Wednesday night. Kate Taylor passed away at 33, leaving a baby girl behind. Please say a little prayer for her and her family. We’ll miss her dearly!

Cam Nasty tops the Expert Open Class at Nationals!

Deciding to enter the Expert Open class at this weekends Nationals was master tuner Dean Charrier’s idea. The plan, Dean was to supply a wicked fast FZR and Cam was to pilot it to victory. That’s just what happend. Monster holeshot after monster holeshot made for an easy win for Cam Nasty. Black Star Motorsports wants to thank Dean for adding icing to the cake for another memorable National Championship race.

Cam was also on the verge of spoiling Rob Greenwald’s birthday weekend in the Runabout N/A Spec class. After holeshoting Greenwald in the final moto, Cam only needed to finish ahead of Rob to take the National victory. An unfortunate 3rd lap wipeout had Cam Nasty swimming and gave Rob the best birthday gift he got all weekend. Congrats to fellow Yamaha riders Rob and Cam for going 1 – 2 at Nationals.

the winner of the Hidden Trails / Black Star Race Edition Can-Am Commander 1000x!

Meet Dallas Carpenter, the winner of the Hidden Trails / Black Star Race Edition Can-Am Commander 1000x!   This raffle could not have been won by a more deserving young man.  Dallas actually had purchased his raffle tickets at the Dirt Track Expo at Hooters back in March.  A few nights before the final drawing, Dallas had wrecked his dirt track race car in a race in Ripley, WV.   After receiving my call about winning the grand prize, he thought his buddies were messing with him.  Classic!  Nothing like winning a wicked 1000cc monster to rip it up in the woods to put a huge smile back on your face.

Congrats Dallas!
